Mythos Deviations: Lines of Reality Review and Rewards

This is a personal, largely spoiler free (or spoiler-vague) review of the fan-made scenario Lines of Reality, part of the Mythos Deviations collection by The Beard for Arkham Horror the Card Game.

The Mythos Deviations are a collection of scenarios design to be added into the existing official campaigns. Lines of Reality is designed to be played as part of the The Dunwich Legacy, after The Essex Count Express (4th scenario), Blood on the Altar (5th scenario), or Undimensioned and Unseen (6th scenario), or as a standalone scenario or side scenario as normal. In Lines of Reality, the investigators are looking into magical channels around Dunwich.

Lines of Reality is a fairly simple scenario that puts a lot of weight on its locations, and leans heavily on classic dunwich encounter cards. It's broken into three parts, the first of which involves collecting clues from locations that punish you if you don't have a particular Dunwich story ally out. However, these punishments are fairly light, meaning there's no real reason to play around them, nor is there a real opportunity to given how many clues you need compared to how many are available - making it a fairly standard clue gathering task. The scenario feels let down by this - if the punishments were harsher, and there were more options for how you could get clues, players would need to react more. On the other hand, this simple mechanic feels fairly appropriate to Dunwich as a whole, while something more complicated might stand out in the rest of the campaign.

The second part of the scenario is random, and can be over relatively quick, feeling rather unnecessary. The third and final part is a clever take on a boss fight that makes good use of what came before, and makes a good escalation of stakes. It's a good wrap to a scenario that introduces fresh complications and brings out new mechanics that give multiple ways to approach the challenge.

With a 19 XP party, I found Lines of Reality on the tricky end, but that's a little under what you can expect if you're doing it as part of a The Dunwich Legacy campaign. Preparing for the normal threats Dunwich throws at you will be a big help.

Lines of Reality is an interesting scenario that doesn't have enough hook to be worth treating as its own standalone event, but should fit into an existing Dunwich campaign well as a way to change things up, add a little more XP, and give a bit more payoff to the Dunwich story allies.
